Street Lighting 

Callers tell us that unlit street lights are a concern. If you are in North Hempstead and have an unlit street light you need repaired, dial 311. If your call is from outside of North Hempstead dial 516-868-6311.  

The call center is open from 7:30 AM to 7:30 PM Monday through Friday, 10:00AM to 6:00PM Saturday and 10:00AM to 5:00 PM on Sunday. 

An operator will take the information and report it to the Department of Public Works for repair. If the street light is not repaired in a reasonable time we recommend that a follow up call be made. Remember to ask for a complaint number and keep it handy for future use.

The Town of North Hempstead operates a Call Center in the "Yes We Can" Community Center at 141 Garden St. It has operated since 2009 and makes 311 the only phone number you need in North Hempstead if only to find which department will handle your question or problem.If you are within the boundaries of  North Hempstead, 311 is the only number you need to call.

Always dial 911 in Police or Medical emergency. 

If your call concerns a complaint of any kind you will be  provided with a complaint number.If it is not offered, remember to ask for and to save it. The complaint number will facilitate follow-up calls to determine what actions are being  taken.

If you make this call from a location not within the Town of North Hempstead, the number to use is “516 TOWN-311. Use this number for every non-emergency call. It is the quickest way to get to the right department and, for  a complaint, it's the best way to put your call "on the record” and wll help to  assure that action follows.
